  • Treadwell 5 Tredwell Close London, England, SW2 3TL United Kingdom (map)

3 sessions, one on Tuesday November 9th 6.30 to 9 pm, and two on Saturday November 19th 10 am to 12.30 pm and 4.30 to 7 pm - all times are London, UK time

This course can be used as module one of the full Online Permaculture Design Course.

Humanity is going through challenging times. Faced with so much uncertainty, a change of ways and a Permaculture way of thinking seems necessary. Despite not currently being able to meet in person, I feel it is important to keep sharing this work and hope it can be done by offering this online course.

On this online introduction to Permaculture course you’ll be taking a few steps into a positive future. Permaculture shows us how we humans can find our healthy place in nature and shift from separation, scarcity and disease to an ecology of wellbeing.

On this face-to-face live online course you’ll be in a virtual classroom, where you’re able to engage with others, contribute and ask questions. We’ll be covering the basics of Permaculture Design and by the end of the course, you will be ready to try it out in your garden, your workplace and your life.

What will the Introduction to Permaculture course offer?

This course introduces the basics of Permaculture and shows how the design methodology can profoundly change the way we look at the world and engage in it. The course gives participants an understanding of the diverse uses and applications of Permaculture Design and its immense potential of turning scarcity into abundance. Participants will walk away with:

… a clear understanding of what Permaculture is, its origins, the context under which it came about and its development;

… knowledge of its ethical framework, the basic ecological, attitudinal and some design principles;

… an overview of its applications in various fields, as a response to social, economic and environmental challenges and as a tool for personal transformation and social change;

… having tested the basic design methodology and various design tools such as zoning, sector analysis and input-output analysis in the group as well as on your own on a design example;

… having seen a presentation of a completed Permaculture Design project;

… enthusiasm and inspiration, as well as some tools for continued learning and application.

"I found the Permaculture Principles we learned all relevant to my life. If I never touch a plant again, my life will still have been changed by this experience."

- Daniel, permaculture intro course participant

Tutors

The course will be delivered by Michel Thill.

Michel has studied Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning with a special interest in the relationship between ecological and cultural renewal. He's come across Permaculture during his studies and was drawn to its ablity to pull together stands of ecological design, community building, social justice and personal change.

Michel has travelled extensively, staying in eco-communities across India and South-East Asia as well as Europe, learning about and applying Permaculture Design and Deep Ecology ideas and knowledge wherever possible.

Michel is currently based in London where he teaches Permaculture and runs various community and food growing projects through Social Landscapes. Inspired by Permaculture and Ecovillage Design principles, Social Landscapes seeks to create flourishing and resilient pockets within London through Permaculture trainings and engaging communities in reimagining the public spaces they live in.

Michel has been teaching Permaculture and Deep Ecology across Europe over the last years. He sees permaculture as a dance with nature, where nature takes the lead to create more harmonious places and futures for all.

Practicalities:

As opposed to many online courses where you follow pre-recorded videos and exercises online, this course offers both, pre-recorded material and face-to-face contact. There will be presentations, discussions and also work in break-away groups of 2, 3 or 4 participants. You will be able to ask live questions and also contribute to the content. Additionally the sessions will be recorded and available afterwards for you to access.

There will be additional coursework and it is recommended that you keep the time between the two Saturday sessions for this. The coursework will take approximately one hour to complete.

Technology

The workshop is offered online using Zoom. What you will need is a good broadband connection and a computer with working speakers and a microphone or headphones with microphone.
